He would be cheap and probably a one year fix, but could take some pressure off of Pina and keep the ball in front of him when he’s behind the plate.
He has a career caught stealing rate of only 14 percent, but on the bright side for fans who were frustrated with Grandal’s eight passed balls last year, Smith didn’t have a single one and he picked off a runner which Grandal did not. He would definitely be a short-term solution, as the reason for not re-signing Yasmani Grandal was more about years and historic catcher regression than money. Unfortunately, he’s 31 years old and doesn’t walk much. 292 in 2018, both with the Chicago White Sox. Since then, he has been a solid catcher hitting for a high average.

After being a seventh round pick in the 2011 Amateur Draft, Smith spent almost six full seasons in the minors before cracking the major leagues late in 2016. I guess one could say the Kevan Smith was a bit of a late bloomer. There are a couple of options that just became available from non-tenders that could help stabilize the situation. Jacob Nottingham could, potentially, be a solid backup or breakout as a starter, but banking on that could be costly. Manny Pina has been solid and a phenomenal defensive catcher for his whole career, but it has been said that he’s not an everyday catcher.
